Bethune, Alexander (1852-1947)

Alexander Bethune was a Vancouver alderman for five years and then mayor in 1907-08. He was also a paid up member of the Asiatic Exclusion League. He was born in Peterborough, Ontario and had a hardware store in Selkirk, Manitoba before coming to Vancouver around 1901 and going into business as a shoe merchant. As mayor, he briefly prohibited the entry of immigrants from India into his city when they arrived in large numbers in fall of 1907, although he did not have the power or authority to stop them from landing and proceeding elsewhere.
