Harnam Kaur (1885-1914)

Harnam Kaur, wife of Bhag Singh, was born in Peshawar, N.W. Frontier province, in 1885. She was one of the few women from India to enter Canada before the First World War; and she was admitted by the Minister of the Interior as an act of grace, only after a major protest within the Canadian South Asian community against the regulations that excluded her. She was the mother of Jopindra, a son born en route to Canada in Hong Kong in December 1911, and a daughter Karam, born in Vancouver on 21 January 1914, but Harnam Kaur died on 30 January 1914 following Karam’s birth.
